Readers, I’ve a Feeling We’re Not in Mazatlán Anymore

May is proving to be its usual delightful self, with tornadoes to the east of me and snowstorms to the north. I’m heading for Mount Rushmore and am in rush less mode (ha ha ha) seeing as the area is being hammered by a blizzard right now!

Here in Santa Fe, it was cold last night. We’re right at the freezing mark this morning, so I bet we went below freezing overnight. I left the furnace on at about 55F so I wouldn’t have to warm up an ice box this morning and the furnace ran on and off all night. Like Miranda, this RV is built to handle some cold with aplomb, so I’m perfectly cozy.

There was a very brief moment of panic this morning when I realised I had just enough coffee left for one cup. I’m not sure how I missed that. Then, I remembered that not only did Rico’s package the pound into two bags, I brought all the food in from the truck, so the last bag of delicious Mexican coffee is in the RV with me. Crisis averted!

The plan for today is still to type in the morning and go downtown in the afternoon. It should be nice out after lunch.

  1. Running out of coffee is not acceptable. If the cold keeps up you might have to fill the propane bottle! I have to keep reminding myself that you are at 7000 feet and the nights are cold.

    • Re coffee: I know, right?! I guess I wasn’t monitoring the levels because I knew at the back of my mind that I had more.

Re propane: there are three large bottles here (I think they are 30lbers) so there is no chance of my running out with the current forecast. I am nowhere near the 10lbs/day use that I had in truly wintery conditions.

  2. If they sell Community brand coffee in NM you might want to try it. It’s a little more expensive than the Folgers and Nabob coffee but less than the fancier ones. We enjoyed it.

    • Thanks, I’ll see if I find some! In Canada, Nabob is my brand of choice on sale, otherwise Co-Op is just fine. Haven’t found a US blend I like yet.

  3. It snowed all night, power went out around 4:30-5 am & is back on. I just thru my wool blanket on the bed & snuggled with Kitty, batteries were good enough to allow heater to cycle on & off about once an hour, set it at 50°F. Still snowing as I type but expected to stop sometime… :/. I’ll be warmer when you get here (I’ve been told ;)). I’m enjoying it anyways! 🙂 😀

    • With weather like that, the only thing to do is burrow under a pile of bedding with a cat!

FYI, for next time, your batteries should last a few days if they’re in decent shape, even with the furnace running. It’s not that cold out. You could have left the rig at a slightly more comfortable temperature (60ish). That’s actually less demanding then letting the temperature drop way down and then trying to bring it up again. But in colder temps, yeah, staying at 50 is the way to go.

I suspect that spring will have sprung by the time I’m ready to leave Santa Fe…
