I met up with my Wednesday crowd again today, only this time at Pili’s/Rudy’s restaurant. It was a bit of a last minute thing and I didn’t know that the food and booze had all been ordered ahead of time and that whomever was there would split the bill evenly until huge platters of food showed up! What an inspired idea! Lunch ended up being $250 each, and that includes the beer and the tip!
Our event organiser had asked for a variety of foods to be made up so there would be something for everyone. We all got a plate with refried beans, salad, and rice, with access to a bottomless basket of tortillas. To share, we had:
-guacamole (topped with cheese!) and totopos
-garlic shrimp
-coconut shrimp
-BBQed chicken (cut in pieces)
-French fries
-a whole grilled red snapper topped with veggies (I’d never had cooked red snapper before!)
-flan (I declined since I don’t eat eggs)
What a spread! The fish in particular was gorgeous, with lots of caramelised bits. There was more than enough for everyone to gorge themselves.
Most of this crowd is French-Canadian, so it was really nice to break out the joual for a couple of hours. I have to laugh that one couple is from Moose Jaw and another couple was practically neighbours with some of my relatives and know one of my uncles!
The blanket guy did some brisk business with us. I might have come home with a small tablecloth, which will be used to cover my couch… 🙂
Rae,
I love Red Snapper down there… or anywhere.
Sounds like a great feast with friends.
Hugs
The red snapper was very good cooked, quite flaky, the way I like my cooked fish. It’s one of my favourite fish for sashimi!
It was great! I was just shocked when the host poured me a beer and then started passing me food without my having ordered anything!
I don’t personally eat seafood; but when I have traveled to Maz with friends that do; they have all said it was by far the best they have ever had!
That sounds like a pretty amazing night 🙂 I am in awe of your life!
The seafood here is great!
It was a great afternoon!
Remember, my life is by design. 🙂
What a fun way to have a meal! I love having just a couple bites of several things. I would have skipped the beans and french fries, though, to keep from it being too much food for me to eat at one time.
I love sharing dishes since you get more variety and have the chance to try new things. I didn’t have many fries, but refried beans are a must and the first layer on a tortilla. 🙂
I love those Snapper, the way the meat pulls off the bone in chunks. Excuse me. my mouth is watering!
Rae,
A comment on your house sitting in Europe. I wish you luck. If you do get any replies I bet they will come from France or Germany.
I doubt that you will hear anything from Eastern Europe. I may be surprised but I don’t think house sitting has spread eastward and if it is done it would be by a relative.
Thanks!
Mind My House does have a few listings for Eastern Europe, so I’m hopeful. There is one for Bulgaria that would have been perfect if I could have gone there for six months. But, unfortunately, I am only allowed to spend 90 days in a six-month period. 🙁
