The Military Coup in Turkey — and News Bias

When something major goes on in the world, I like to check multiple news sources from different countries. There was a military coup overnight (local time) to overthrow the current regime. The news coverage has varied from disinterested (CBC in Canada), sensationalist (all US sources I’ve seen and ABC in Spain), informational (BBC in the UK and Le monde in France), and rather blasé (English news source in Bulgaria). It just goes to show that you need to get your news from multiple sources to get an idea of the real situation.

From what I can piece together, order has been restored in Turkey (ie. the coup failed), border controls into Bulgaria have been tightened, and Bulgarians have been advised not to go to Turkey.

For me, personally, this just goes to show why I have not made any firm plans beyond mid-September. I had really hoped to go to Turkey for a month and, while I still believe that, statistically, I’m safer in Turkey than I am in the US right now, I may not be able to. I am very happy to have found an English source for local(ish) news and keeping myself informed so I can make educated decisions.

    • Linda, I’ve read several statistical studies that said the same thing. The way things are right now in the States with shootings all over the place, a person is more likely to get caught in a violent incident than in many of the world’s hot spots. Basically, there is absolutely no safe place in the US right now, but it’s not difficult to avoid areas that could be problematic in other countries.

  1. Because every other idiot is carrying!!
You couldn’t pay me enough to go to US.
Have given up a $550 credit with American Airlines because I will NOT enter US.

    • Shirley, I don’t blame you for giving up that credit. Flying through the States sucks because of the insane, and useless, TSA.

  2. Hi Rae,
Even here in Haven, we know that the attempted coup by some military in Turkey failed. CBC AM 540 has kept us very well informed. We had almost blow by blow coverage and follow up with As It Happens. Same with the truck & driver on the rampage in Nice. But Charles & I are, by far, the most up to date on current events in Haven. We do have our hermit who thinks that he is enlightened but is a potato salad short of a picnic…..
Enjoy Sofia. I checked my family tree, shook it, got out a few nuts, found out that my maternal grandfather was born in Sofia.

    • Hi! I’m glad to know the radio coverage was good. I was rather distressed by the poor coverage on the cbc.ca website…

Your comment about our village hermit was awful, but made me laugh. 😉

And you’re a Sofia-ite! What are the odds?!
