Just Another Day in Paradise

I had another full work day transcribing a boring, but wonderfully easy, board meeting.

Mid-afternoon, I worked up the guts to call TelMex myself to see if I could at least get confirmation that my DSL internet order had been put in. I found a number for them, painstakingly made my way through their menu until I was sure that Infinitum home technical service was very likely where I needed to be, waited forever, got a live person, and MY PHONE CONNECTION DROPPED.

Seriously?!

TelCel charges for a ‘toll free’ call and the calling rates are ridiculous, something like 5 pesos per minute, so I did not have enough money in my account to try again. 🙁

I’m going to try my landlady again tomorrow and leave a messages saying that I tried TelMex and that they would only speak to the person who put in the order and could she please pretty please try to get confirmation that the order is in their queue?

I was bummed after that, so I emailed Dale and invited her over for supper. She said that she was going to do the same and that she already had supper made for us! Since her RV is tiny and the bugs make exterior dining unpleasant, she said she would bring dinner, a veggie and rice stir fry, to me. Awesome!

This motivated me to get my work done quickly and by 6:30, I was waiting for her to arrive. Her timing was perfect, giving me about five minutes to unwind. I offered to toast some pecans to go with our stir fry for protein and she was very happy about that. Her stir fry was delicious!

I whipped up some bananas and almond butter for dessert and she absolutely loved that. She’s the first person who has tried my ‘banana ice cream’ and her reaction was exactly what I expected. That stuff is awesome! 🙂

I walked her home after, just to get a leg stretch and some fresh air. I’m not making myself as homebound as I was last week waiting for internet service, allowing myself to go out before eight and after three, so I am getting some exercise. But with the work queue being what it is, I don’t have that much time to go exploring anyway. I will make it a point some day next week to go ‘downtown’ with Dale and find the grocery stores, though.

One of Dale’s friends plays music at various night clubs around the city and she is going to organize a night for us to go out to listen and dance! It’ll be our first time going out after dark (with an expected return home time of no later than eleven). We are going to walk to the panga and back on this side, but will take a pulmonia on the Maz side. It’ll be a nice break in the routine!

  1. nice to see you are getting into the groove of life on the isla. It seems that getting things done is a thing that needs to become accustomed to. Soon you will have speedier internet, mañana, peut ètre…

  2. Peter, internet bandwidth amount, not speed, is the issue. Cellular data is expensive here! 🙂

Linda, I take a fully ripe, but not super mushy, banana and pop it in the freezer. When I want a treat, I take it out and let it sit for five to ten minutes to soften every so slightly and then cut it up into one-inch chunks that I throw into the food processor. I then add a tablespoon of almond or peanut butter and whip until smooth.

The calories in this are just about equivalent to a similar portion of plain ice cream, but it’s better sugars and you get fiber and protein.

Tip: hazelnut butter plus banana plus tons of unsweetened cocoa equals ‘Nutella’ ice cream. 🙂
