On the Spot

I had an interview this afternoon and went to it thinking that it would be a waste of time, just like all my previous job ventures in Lethbridge. This was confirmed when I realised, after I was offered a long-term, salaried, position (!), that they neglected to notice the sentence at the very top of my resume that said that I’m only looking for work into October.

I wasn’t even disappointed, but they were crestfallen. “But you have such great credentials! You’re perfect for us!” And then I saw a light bulb go on over the interviewer’s head and she invented a job for me right on the spot!

I start some general training tomorrow and by Monday they’ll have a better idea of my duties, responsibilities, and schedule.  It’s part-time, no guaranteed hours, and no promise that it’ll even go through October, but it’s relief and a good fit for both of us. I wouldn’t have wanted something full-time or regular now, not with how my transcription business has taken off, so this is perfect.

The burning question of course is, what will I be doing? Well, starting tomorrow, I’ll be adding ‘apartment manager’ to my resume!

  1. Congratulations! It does seem like a great fit. Your handy-man and organizational skills will come in useful. Based on my own experience in this field, I hope you won’t need steel toed boots (metaphorically speaking)!

  2. It does sound like a good match for you. I hope you don’t get any middle of the night “my toilet is overflowing” calls, though.

  3. LOL, I am delighted you are finding the work you need, but find it funny for a full time RVer to be connected to an apartment. On of the usual perks is an apartment. I am so glad the financial aspects of your life are working. I am selfish in wanting you to be able to spend time this winter in the USA, because I am hoping we can connect again.
    Take care!

  4. I think everyone has the wrong idea. 🙂 Or, rather, I didn’t explain well enough. I’m just going to take over collecting rent and being a person in the office a few hours a week until they get a new resident manager. I’ll be floating around between a few locations and shouldn’t be responsible for overnight calls. I’m really there for admin support more than anything.

Joni: I’m hoping to make it back to the US, too! I won’t know for a couple more months if that’s going to happen. I’ll keep the blog updated about that. 🙂

Donna: Don’t worry, I put Tuesday as one of the three days this summer that I can’t work. Make sure the beer is cold and the pizza is hot! 😉

  5. Congrats! I’m now living with family and trying to find a job in Seattle that I can work at and save money up to buy an RV with. I hate it when people ask me what I plan to do in “5 years” because all I want to say is..NOT HERE! I’ll be in my RV travelling on the road as a fulltimer! You go girl. You’re living my dream!

  6. oh yeah…my family has 5 acres on Camano Island, WA and you are welcome to come visit and stay anytime!! Just email me if you want. I’d love to meet you and pick your brain. I have two cats too….and a dog.
