I just got back from the holiday potluck at the RV park. It was a lovely time with good company and good food. It was so neat to be eating a full Christmas meal outside under palm trees!
Most of the traditional foods were present, like turkey (complete with cranberry sauce and gravy), yam casserole, and mashed potatoes. Another French-Canadian lady even made tourtière! I’m pretty sure it’s the first time in about 20 years that I’ve had this traditional French-Canadian holiday staple, and I’m in Mexico of all places! There were a lot of other dishes, too. I brought a big pot full of sautéed onions, garlic, chayote, carrots, and broccoli and went halfsies with Dale on a huge plate of pastries.
I loaded up on the broccoli and turkey and only had a couple of bites of dessert, not wanting a repeat of last year where I said, “Bah, it’s Christmas,” had everything I wanted, shocked my system, and felt like crap for a week after!
We ate early (about 3:30), so we got to watch the sunset on the beach before the bugs chased us in!
Even though the 25th of December is truly just another day for me (I worked a full day), I’ve somehow managed to find myself having a holiday dinner every year since I left in ’08 except in ’10:
’08: potluck at the nasty RV park in Oliver with the lovely guests
’09: dinner with a friend’s parents in Campbell River
’10: nothing at all as I was in the Osoyoos park with the vile busybodies. I shut myself in and worked on my ebook
’11: dinner with Jody and Gary in Lethbridge
’12: dinner with my adopted Virginia family (miss you guys!)
’13: dinner with my adopted Saskatchewan family (miss you guys!)
What can I say, I love a turkey dinner. 🙂
Merry Christmas Rae! Sounds like good friends, good food, & good weather. Pretty sweet combo. Really not too cold in Manitoba, and my girls and their families are providing the good food & company to Nancy & I, but we hope to head for “warm” in a few weeks.
